BIO

Dr. Kathi Mooney is a Distinguished Professor and holds the Louis S. Peery and Janet B. Peery Presidential Endowed Chair in the College of Nursing. She is a Research Staff Investigator at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) and from 2013-2025 co-led HCI’s Cancer Control and Populations Sciences Program. Her research focuses on cancer care delivery, digital health applications and value-based care models, integrating methods from the fields of innovation design and clinical oncology, using both clinical trials and community-based research approaches. Dr. Mooney is an international leader in cancer patient-reported outcomes, technology-enabled remote symptom monitoring and home-based models of cancer care delivery. She developed Symptom Care at Home, a comprehensive telehealth platform that remotely monitors and manages patient-reported cancer symptoms at home. Her research has been continuously funded by the National Cancer Institute for more than twenty-five years and she has received both the University’s and her professional society, the Oncology Nursing Society’s, Distinguished Researcher Awards. Since 2018 she has developed and evaluated the first of its kind, acute and subacute cancer care at home model, Huntsman at Home, a nurse-led program focused on acute and supportive care. It began in Salt Lake City, Utah and then, in 2021, was extended to 3 rural counties in southeastern Utah, a 3-5-hour drive from the University in order to address cancer care access barriers for people living in remote rural communities. Through an ARPA-H PARADIGM award in 2025, she with a team of colleagues is now developing and evaluating a decentralized cancer care model that extends acute care, symptom management, selected cancer treatments and clinical trials to rural communities through the addition of mobile vehicles outfitted with advanced medical technology and infusion capabilities.
