BIO

Dr. Naiyang Ma is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Utah, where he conducts research on economically viable strategies for recycling industrial solid wastes. His work focuses on minimizing environmental impact, boosting production efficiency, and improving economic performance.
A pioneer in the development of in-process dynamic separation, Dr. Ma created a novel recycling strategy that uses excess process energy to extract contaminants from recyclable solid wastes. He has successfully applied this technique to various byproducts, including dust and sludge from blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace off-gas cleaning systems, electric arc furnace dust, and hot rolling mill scale. Notably, his technology for separating mill scale from flume water produces clean mill scale, water, and oil, advancing the hot rolling process toward zero waste.
Dr. Ma's contributions have earned several prestigious awards, including the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Medal Award in 2020 and the AIST Environmental Technology Award for Best Paper and Presentation in both 2012 and 2020. Dr. Ma spent nearly 20 years at ArcelorMittal Global R&D, rising from Senior Engineer to Principal Scientist. Earlier in his career, he held positions as a lecturer and associate professor at the East China Institute of Metallurgy.
