BIO
Research Foundations
I received my PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Utah in 2004, and I am now a Research Associate Professor in the College of Social Work at the University of Utah. For over two decades, I have worked as a Statistician, Research Methodologist, and Data Scientist, collaborating on quantitative aspects of research spanning Criminal Justice, Homelessness, Social Policy, Law, Epidemiology, Medicine, Psychology, and Education. I understand the unique methodological and analytic challenges across disciplines. This breadth of experience informs my approach to each new collaboration and helps me bridge disciplinary boundaries while respecting field-specific methods.
I have considerable experience developing experimental and quasi-experimental designs for causal inference, including leading large-scale randomized controlled trials, instrumental variable designs, regression point displacement designs, regression discontinuity designs, and covariate balanced propensity scores (CBPS, as a methodology). My analytic strengths are in longitudinal/multilevel modeling from both Frequentist and Bayesian perspectives. I also have experience in a range of (related) advanced analytic methods, including generalized linear mixed models and generalized additive mixed models, latent class analysis, hidden Markov models, classification techniques, scale validation, interrater reliability and validity, text mining, and machine learning.
Research Design & Planning
My support for researchers and teams includes the project development stage, where I have cross-discipline experience contributing to research design, simulation-based power analyses for grants, methodological and quantitative grant writing, and survey instrument construction. Whether beginning at the initial stages or assisting later in the research process, experience in these areas helps me understand projects at a deeper level, while also providing insight into the nature of the unique research questions that drive each project.
Data Management
I can provide comprehensive data management expertise using R (as well as SPSS) for cleaning, integration, and analysis of complex datasets. This includes experience with large-scale database management containing several million cases, such as population-level criminal justice data and Medicaid data. These experiences have furthered my appreciation for the importance of reproducible research methods, sustainable data management processes, and transparent analytic code development and documentation. My technical skills also extend to developing interactive dashboards and data visualization tools that translate research findings into accessible formats for academic, policy, and community stakeholders.
Approach
As principal investigator on multiple randomized control trials, I am familiar with the challenges of implementing complex research designs and translating findings into policy-based insights. I approach each collaboration as an opportunity, where the exchange of ideas might lead to stronger research informed by cross-discipline collaboration. My commitment is to understand research goals while respecting disciplinary contexts and the substantive expertise of primary researchers.
