Dr. William A. Smith carries the title of Distinguished Professor[1] at the University of Utah while holding the rank of Full Professor. His appointments span across the Department of Psychiatry, the Department of Education, Culture, & Society, and the Department of Ethnic, Gender, & Disability Studies. As Chief Executive Administrator for Strategic Initiatives and Mental Health Justice at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, Dr. Smith leads institutional development efforts and oversees national initiatives to normalize mental health and advance mental health justice.

Internationally renowned for his pioneering work on Racial Battle Fatigue, a concept he coined in 2003, Dr. Smith has significantly advanced scholarly understanding of how systemic racism and racial aggressions, both micro and macro, affect the mental and physical well-being of racially minoritized individuals. He defines Racial Battle Fatigue as a systemic racism-related repetitive stress injury, emphasizing the profound cumulative toll of racial aggressions on those targeted by racism.

Dr. Smith’s scholarly contributions include co-editing the seminal work The Racial Crisis in American Higher Education: The Continuing Challenges for the 21st Century, which was published in its third edition in 2023. In 2023 and 2025, he ranked in the Top 1% of U.S. research professors in the RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings, highlighting his influence on educational practice and policy. In 2023, he received the American Education Research Association (AERA) Scholars of Color Distinguished Career Contribution Award for his leadership in advancing racial equity in education. Dr. Smith is married to Dr. Paula Smith, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Utah. Together, they have four children: three sons, Kenon William, Kubasa, and M. Kasim, and one daughter, S. Abena. They are the proud grandparents of four grandsons: Keyonte William, Kaden, Kiyon, and Kero.
