RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research program is organized into five primary areas:
- Mathematical Modeling & Industry Impact: I developed mathematical models that accurately predict cycling power and speed under diverse conditions. This work has spawned an entire industry of optimization tools, including the Garmin Track Aero System, Best Bike Split, PhysFarm Training Systems, and Analytic Cycling, used by world-class coaches and sport scientists to obtain wind-tunnel quality data from field testing.
- Challenging Cycling Dogma (Crank Length): My research demonstrated that crank length does not directly limit maximal power or submaximal efficiency, transforming a long-held "one-size-fits-all" dogma into a customizable fitting variable. This work has directly influenced the professional peloton, with Tour de France champions recently adopting shorter cranks to optimize comfort and performance [User Context].
- Neuromuscular Fatigue: I investigate the differential roles of muscle force-velocity relationships and activation/relaxation characteristics during cyclic contractions in both laboratory and field settings.
- Eccentric Exercise: My lab was the first to demonstrate that maximal muscular power is significantly improved in the weeks following eccentric training, providing novel stimuli for power development.
- Single-Leg Cycling: I have pioneered work showing that single-leg training can produce extraordinarily large increases in muscle respiratory capacity in as few as six sessions. Recently, I validated that these benefits can be achieved using standard cycling equipment, making this elite adaptation accessible for rehabilitation and aging populations.
