Jeff M. Phillips

I primarily teach and organize courses within the Data Science and the AI curriculum.  I have developed and most commonly taught the Data Mining and the Foundations of Data Analysis courses within the Kahlert School of Computing.  I have also taught courses on probability and statistics, algorithms for big data, eithics in data science, and high-dimensional data analysis.  Within data science courses I am aim to provide students with an intuitive understanding of the techniques which succeed in modeling data well, being efficient both computationally and statistically, and are used in practice.  I tend to focus more on mathematical formulations, by striving for simple notation and explanations.  

I also help direct most of the data science curriculum within the Kahlert School of Computing, much of which I helped develop.  This includes the BS in Data Science, the graduate track in Data Management & Analysis, an online set of courses for BioTech Data Science, as well as both graduate and undergraduate certificates in data science.  My goal is to help organize, propagate, and integrate the teaching of data science and AI across campus in any discipline.
