Associate Professor

Film & Media Arts

BIO

Award-winning filmmakers Sonia and Miriam Albert-Sobrino, known as ALSO Sisters, bring an innovative approach to directing. Their hands-on involvement in screenwriting, directing, cinematography, and editing highlights their deep understanding of filmmaking.

Before entering the world of filmmaking, Sonia and Miriam worked as Registered Nurses in Spain and Scotland— a background that shapes their narratives and informs their preference for active on-set roles over traditional directing.

After transitioning to film and completing their undergraduate studies in the field, they earned Master of Fine Arts degrees in Film Production in the US, which laid the foundation for their distinct style. Their films have received acclaim at festivals such as the Sitges International Film Festival, Screamfest, Edinburgh, Raindance, Cinespaña, etc. Their first feature, The Story of a Satellite, was nominated for Best Debut Feature at the Raindance Film Festival.

Their adaptability is evident in projects like "The Unbearing", "Face Not Recognized. Try Again", and "Aura", which received recognition at festivals including Méliès and Academy Award qualifiers.

Currently, ALSO Sisters are working on post-production for two horror films: a short titled "A Clown Walks into a Restroom…" and The Stairwell, their first feature filmed in the United States. This cosmic horror story, featuring an all-female lead cast, explores the complexities of human nature and the concept of the “other.” Additionally, they are developing a new screenplay for a horror film set in Spain, titled "No Man is an Island". This script has garnered substantial recognition in screenplay competitions, ranking in the Top 4% of all 159,454 projects on Coverfly and the Top 2% of 4,769 short horror projects.

ALSO Sisters teach at the University of Utah’s Film and Media Arts Department, sharing their expertise and shaping the next generation of filmmakers. Their pseudonym, “ALSO Sisters,” reflects their partnership and collaborative approach.
