As co-chair of READ-U, I am involved in organizing several community and school-focused events that aim to promote literacy, cultural understanding, and social and emotional learning. Here are some of the key events and initiatives: READ-U Events Educator Workshops: READ-U hosts workshops for educators, such as the 2024 Educator Workshop (6/4/24). These events focus on using picturebooks to facilitate challenging discussions, create safe spaces for students, and develop social-emotional capacities. Participants explored specific READ-U units incorporating diverse picturebooks to introduce topics, widen perspectives, and engage students in meaningful discussions2. Author Events: READ-U also organizes author events that take place in public schools and in the community. We have co-hosted 1 - 2 author events since 2019.
