TEACHING INTERESTS
I have the privilege of guiding learners to discover new knowledge, frameworks, and methods for understanding and actualizing our professional roles. I seek to accomplish this by bringing a systems-science perspective to the content and skills we teach in our classrooms, and to the experiential learning opportunities we design for our students. My teaching and course design are a result of careful consideration of context and environment, and of student, faculty, and healthcare dynamics. I acknowledge and embrace the collective wisdom of the classroom and strive to provide students with the certainty of guidance through often uncertain pathways to learning. The intensely personal nature of these learning experiences serves to prepare learners for the varied and demanding roles of our professions.
Education is never accomplished solely through knowledge transmission. I design my teaching to support critical thinking and promote the search for greater understanding. When we react, instead of reflect, we miss the opportunities to deepen our knowledge and fully enjoy the personal and professional development that is available to us in higher education. This requires each of us as learners to recognize our current ways of knowing, and to be willing to grow our knowledge and reconsider our frameworks for understanding. It can be challenging to remain reflective, especially when new information is inconsistent with our current ways of understanding. With every encounter, I go through this process myself, learning from all who share our classroom spaces. It is my hope that you will embrace your education as an opportunity for reflection and a deepening of your own knowledge.
