SETH KEETON

Associate Professor

School of Music

BIO

Bass-baritone, Seth Keeton’s performances have been described by The New York Times as “driven” and “emotionally pointed,” and “stentorian” by Opera News. He has performed roles on the stages of opera companies throughout the United States, and Theater Bremen in Bremen, Germany. In 2006, he was a national finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and has received awards from the Sullivan Foundation and the Eleanor McCollum Competition.

As a digital humanities scholar, Dr. Keeton has founded the Classical Singing Humanities Lab. The Lab strives to create research tools for classical singers, scholars, and enthusiasts. In 2019 Keeton created the online song index SongHelix, that simplifies the discovery of related art songs, and 2025 saw the release of The Aspen Grove of Opera Singers, a database that visualizes the vast history of opera singers and their teachers from 1625 to the present. These free resources can be found at www.songhelix.com and www.theaspengrove.org.

In art song and in recital, he presents tightly knit recitals, singing pieces in unique combination and often including rarely performed works. In 2018, he was featured on a recording, Chamber Music, Volume 2, of forgotten composer, Richard Stöhr, and 2020 saw the release of Transparent Boundaries, an album of art song set to the poetry of Whitman and Dickinson.

Dr. Keeton received his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Minnesota and is an Associate Professor of Voice at the University of Utah.
