RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am scholar of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy.

My work to date has focused especially on the later parts of that tradition, especially Hellenistic schools like the skeptical Academy, Stoicism, and Epicureanism. I have written a lot about the Roman statesman and philosopher, Cicero. I also maintain an interest in early Christian thought. My work on these ancient thinkers has focused on what in philosophy today would be called the philosophy of religion, epistemology, and ethics.

I continue to work on Cicero and his period, but my larger current projects are two books: Hope in Ancient Philosophy and Whence Evil?: The Modern Problem of Evil in Ancient Greco-Roman Thought. A second current research project is on the history of the contemplative life in classical thought, before and after the arrival of the Abrahamic faiths in Greco-Roman society.
