BIO

I hold a joint appointment as a Professor at the University of Utah College of Nursing and as a Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Primary Children's Medical Center. I have over 35 years of experience as a pediatric oncology nurse and hold national certification as a pediatric oncology nurse. I am a participating faculty member of the University of Utah’s Digital Health Initiative (DHI) as well as a member of the Cancer Control and Population Science group at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Intermountain West.

My research interests emphasize symptom management and supportive care for children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer with attention to digital health interventions to capture an individualized perspective of the symptom experience to support patient-centered care. I am a founding member of the Consortium to Study Symptoms in Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer (CS2AYAC), a consortium of nurse researchers in the United States with a shared interest in studying symptoms in adolescents and young adults with cancer. Our team has developed the heuristics-based, the Computerized Symptom Capture Tool (C-SCAT), which is presently being evaluated in a multi-site R01 award from the National Cancer Institute (R01CA286799). The game-based Color Me Healthy symptom assessment app for elementary school-age children was developed through a K23 Award (1K23NR014874) from the National Institute of Nursing Research). An R01 from the National Cancer Institute (R01CA291977) is allowing my interprofessional team with experts in bomedical informatics, digital health, and game design to integrate children's self-reported into the electronic health record and evaluate its efficacy to improve symptom communication.
