BIO
I received a BS degree in Animal Physiology from UC Davis and a MS degree in Physical Therapy from Duke University. I received my Ph.D. in Exercise and Sports Science with a focus on Motor Learning and Motor Control in 2001. I have been a Certified Athletic Trainer since 1989 and a licensed Physical Therapist since 1991. Prior to my current tenure track position, I worked clinically as a dual-credentialed Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer for 15 years. My clinical assignments included positions at the Duke University Medical Center (Inpatient Medicine, Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, Sports Medicine Center, and Student Sports Injury Clinic), as a per diem Athletic Trainer for the United States Soccer Federation, as an Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and as a Physical Therapist at the University of Utah Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit and then the University of Utah Sports Medicine Center.
As a PhD-trained movement scientist and physical therapist / athletic trainer with extensive experience in movement control and rehabilitation in individuals with balance disorders, I have focused my research on populations with balance and mobility deficits including but not limited to Parkinson Disease (PD), Multiple Sclerosis, and vestibular disorders. Over the past 2 decades we have utilized motion capture technologies to examine balance disorders in the context of neurodegenerative diseases and have evolved to utilize wearable sensors to capture movement and coordination outside of the laboratory. With grant support from the NIH, the DoD, the US Army, the University of Utah and Foundations, my colleagues and I have made valuable contributions to the scientific basis for rehabilitation.
My academic leadership roles at the University of Utah have included Program Director for the Athletic Training Education Program, Associate Department Chair for the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, Chair of the College of Health College Council, Academic Senator for the College of Health, and member of the Executive Committee of the University of Utah Academic Senate. I currently serve as the Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training. My professional service experience includes service on the Utah State Physical Therapy Association Board of Directors, the Utah State Parkinson Disease Association Executive Board, the Neurology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association, the Journal of Hand Therapy and the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy. Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and flyfishing.
