TEACHING INTERESTS
Bridging Theory, Practice, and Culture
My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that architecture is a fundamental social act. As Co-Director of DesignBuildUTAH@Bluff, I guide students through the complete arc of a project—from culturally responsive design to full-scale construction—bridging the critical gap between academic theory and professional reality.
In our graduate-level studios (Advanced Design & Technical Construction), we transform the classroom into a professional office where students navigate real-world constraints, budget management, and client relations within the Navajo Nation. Through the "Sweat Equity" model, students build alongside clients, learning not just technical craftsmanship but also the value of community empowerment.
Beyond construction, I emphasize haptic learning and embodied observation. In courses such as Southwest Architecture & Culture, I encourage students to move beyond digital representation to engage directly with the landscape through hand-sketching and material experiments with local earth plaster. From introductory workshops to international fieldwork comparing rural Japan and the rural American Southwest, my curriculum is designed to cultivate resilient architects who possess both the poetic sensitivity to design systems and material selection and the technical confidence to build.
