RESEARCH INTERESTS
My long-term research goal is to improve the value of post stroke rehabilitation by understanding person and system level variability. There are three components of my research agenda: 1) longitudinal measurement of function and healthcare utilization, 2) characterizing variability in functional outcomes and healthcare utilization, and 3) characterizing and improving value of care. Each of these components build on one another and work together to achieve my long-term goal.
Measuring functional outcomes and healthcare utilization over time is the foundation of my research agenda since both are required to understanding and improving value. This work primarily focuses on developing and accessing methods to collect and curate data with detailed measures at scale and used methods such as cost-effective digital health solutions, common data models, and data standardization within and across health systems.
Characterizing variability related to functional outcomes and healthcare utilization is dependent on having good measurement and is central to improving the value of healthcare by enabling the targeted delivery of interventions. This component of my research involves using real-world data, such as that from the electronic medical record and claims data, to explore variability in a number of analytical approaches, including artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Longitudinal measurement of function and healthcare utilization coupled with characterizing variability in functional outcomes and healthcare utilization allows for characterizing and improving the value of care. This is the ultimate goal of my research agenda and will enable improved patient outcomes (i.e., effective care) at a reasonable cost (i.e., efficient care).
