BIO

Tim Palmer is Professor of Film & Media Arts at the University of Utah, whose research has been sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.  His books are Brutal Intimacy: Analyzing Contemporary French Cinema (2011), Irreversible (2015), and, as co-editor, Directory of World Cinema: France (2013).  His next book is Cinema Marianne: A Rewilding History of Women and Marginality in the French Film Ecosystem.

Palmer's research spans the creative industries of French, Francophone and world cinemas, as well as film and literature, feminist media historiography, the international essay film, archives and archival interventions, stardom and performance, and, increasingly, gender representation and queer media.  His work appears in leading academic peer-reviewed journals, including The Moving Image, French Screen Studies, The French Review, Cinema Journal, Journal of Film and Video, Modern & Contemporary France, New Review of Film and Television Studies, Studies in French Cinema, and numerous scholarly book anthologies in the UK, the US, France, and Italy.

Palmer is also co-founder and co-Editor-in-Chief of Film Matters, the world's first peer-reviewed film and media journal for undergraduates.  Published digitally and in print around the world, Film Matters champions emerging scholarship, professionalizes students, and liaises with global media production companies.  See: filmmattersmagazine.com

Alongside his academic work, Palmer subtitles French films into English, so as to screen them in university classrooms and expand the reach of marginalized or forgotten makers.  His professional interests also engage film and media archives, curation and curatorial work, art museums and galleries, and media publishing.
