BIO

Hiroko Yamamoto, born in Nagoya, Japan, studied Japanese traditional architecture at Kobe University, where she earned a master's degree in Architecture. Her formative years were enriched by immersive design-build workshop experiences alongside her mentor architect Kinya Maruyama, fostering a hands-on architectural education approach. Interacting with skilled craftsmen, including the renowned master plaster Naoki Kusumi, instilled in her a profound appreciation for the artistry and impact of physical craftsmanship.

After gaining valuable experience as a licensed architect and construction manager at a Tokyo-based development firm, Hiroko was drawn back to the transformative power of hands-on learning programs. In 2011, she made a significant career shift, relocating to the United States to contribute her expertise to the DesignBuildUTAH program.

Currently serving as a co-director of the DesignBuildUTAH program and an Adjunct Assistant Professor within the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Utah, Hiroko collaborates closely with her husband, Atsushi Yamamoto, to lead the DesignBuildUTAH@Bluff program. Her academic pursuits delve into the profound impact of hands-on architectural education on local communities, with a keen focus on regional building techniques, particularly earthen local materials. Settled in scenic Bluff, Utah, Hiroko shares her daily adventures with her two daughters and husband - both her life partner and business associate.

Immersed in the enchanting surroundings of the American Southwest, Hiroko ardently embraces her passion for experiential learning and collaborative creativity. Particularly interested in providing hands-on experiences to local children and youth, she aspires to broaden the impact of her transformative experiences by organizing volunteer activities such as KidsDesignBuild, Girls Scout initiatives, and community events. Through such endeavors, Hiroko aims to underscore the joy of communal creativity and craftsmanship, making a tangible difference in the lives of those she touches.
